Cardiology Department
The department has a long history. In the 1950s, the Affiliated Hospital of Medical College of the Central University, predecessor of Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital, was prepared to establish the department of cardiology by the famous cardiologist Wu Decheng. Therefore, the department of cardiology was set up in 1954 and Prof. Wu Decheng was the first director of this department. The first right heart catheterization operation of Southwestern China was performed in 1958 by Prof. Wu Decheng, Zhang Zhengzhong and other experts. In addition, Prof. Zheng Zhuxu took the lead of studying cardiology electrophysiology of intermittent His bundle block in Sichuan province and completed the first operation of elective coronary artery angiography in the middle of 1980s. Furthermore, the first mitral balloon angioplasty in Sichuan province was carried out in this dept. in 1989. Subsequently, many interventional operations, such as the radiofrequency ablation, pacemaker implantation, coronary artery stent implantation, transcatheter closure of congenital heart disease were carried out in the dept.
This dept. has attracted many well-known experts and talents in the past half century. Prof. Zhang Zhengzhong, Zheng Zhuxu, Cai Li and Jiang Rongjian have served as director of the dept. in succession after director Wu Decheng. At present, the number of regular and temporarily employed medical staff is about 80, including 5 chief physicians, 9 deputy chief physicians, 6 physicians, 1 resident doctors, more than 56 nurses and senior nurses. Among them, 6 doctors have doctoral degree and 12 master’s degree. Twelve people were served as chairman, vice chairman, standing member, and commissioner of the Natonal or Sichuan provincial or Chengdu cardiovascular professional committees.
This dept. is a medical section with 2 clinical wards and 1 cardiovascular disease institute after development of many years. There are 102 beds in the service, including 10 beds for CCU. Many advanced facilities were equipped in the dept., including 10 central monitors, 56 bed monitors, 6 multi-lead electrocardiograms, 4 defibrillators, 8 electronic blood pressure meters, 28 microinfusion pumps, 1 ventilator, 1 multi-lead physiological recorder, 1 digital imaging instrument, and 4 intervention operation rooms. More than 4500 cardiovascular in-patients and 48000 outpatients were treated and more than 3800 intervention operations were performed in our department. We are highly praised by the patients.
There are 2 divisions, clinical cardiology and interventional cardiology with professional talents in the dept. The clinical cardiology covers hypertension, coronary heart disease, myocarditis, cardiomyopathy, heart failure and arrhythmia. Director Jiang Rongjian is the academic leader of the clinical cardiology. We offer the diagnosis and treatment of the following diseases: coronary heart disease including angina and myocardial infarction, primary hypertention, myocarditis, cardiomyo-
pathy, rheumatoid, senile valvular heart disease, infective endocarditis, pericarditis, pericardial effusion, infective endocarditis, heart failure, and arrhythmia.
The interventional cardiology includes 3 subgroups: coronary artery interventional therapy, cardiac pacing and electrophysiology, structural heart disease. Prof. Cai Li, vice president of Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital and head of the institute of cardiovascular diseases, is the academic leader of interventional cardiology. The following advanced operations are performed in the interventional cardiology: selective coronary angiography, PTCA and coronary artery stent implantation, esophageal and cardiac electrophysiology examination, all kinds of radiofrequency ablation, including 3 dimensional mapping for the treatment of complex arrhythmia such as atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia, cardiac single chamber and double chamber pacemaker implantation, three chamber pacemaker (CRT, CRT-D) and ICD implantation, interventional closure of atrioventricular septal defect and artery patent ductus arteriosus, balloon dilatation of pulmonary valve stenosis, occlusion of left atrial appendage in patients with atrial fibrillation, intra aortic balloon counterpulsation, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), rotational atherectomy, the determination of fractional flow reserve of coronary artery, etc.
At present, this dept. is also a clinical section with various scientific research talents and academic atmosphere. More than 100 papers have been published in the recent three years. Among them, 34 papers were indexed by SCI. One international cooperation project was undertaken. In addition, 2 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and more than 10 provincial and bureau-level projects are undertaken. We published 1 academic monograph as the editor-in-chief and took part in publishing two academic monographs. Scientific researches are conducted in many field such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, hear failure, arrhythmia, etc. The following natural scientific projects own domestic leading or advanced level: AKT/GSK3β signaling in calpain induced heart failure of sepsis mice, the role of calapin in heart failure of sepsis mice, the role and mechanism of ADAMS-1 in fibrosis of viral myocarditis, the anti-apoptosis of ARC in chronic viral myocarditis. The previous research results have won 1 first class, 1 second class, 1 third class prizes of Sichuan Provincial Science-Technology Progress Prize, 1 third class prize of Chinese Medical Science-Technology Progress Prize and 1 third class of Chengdu Science-Technology Progress Prize, respectively. In 2014, this department of cardiology was named Sichuan Province Key Discipline, Grade A. In the same year, the National Public Health and Family Planning Commission cardiac interventional therapy training base (pacing and electro physiology) was awarded and the trainees were enrolled.
